A couple of months ago I wrote about a story in the Wall Street Journal about Bare Feet, Gyms, and Treadmills. The story was the usual mix of misconceptions about bare feet, this time in a gym or fitness center environment. Its saving grace was that it included interviews with real barefooters.

There’s a new story out about fitness center gross-outs.

    Get a time machine and go back to the 1970s. Or even early 1980s. Was normal then, as you can see in the picture of Arnold. Was normal in my college gym 35 years ago. No one gave it a second look. Also shirtless workouts were common. Gyms from the mid 1980s to today are trying to make themselves “upscale” and have appearance based dress codes, using “safety” and “liability” and “sanitation” to make it sound more serious. The young gym managers of today do not know the history, and thinks it is so.
